Mac 32-bit Support Ending, Users Being Warned

You can see which processor is in your Mac from the About window in macOS

Apple has not said exactly when it will stop supporting 32-bit apps, and it's likely to still be some way off in the future - but that day is still drawing closer.

In addition to receiving the alert once when a 32-bit app is launched, Apple also lets users check for 64-bit compatibility through the system report feature.

Starting with macOS 10.13.4, Mac users will receive a one-time alert when attempting to run a 32-bit app.

Developers of apps like these will need to update their software to 64-bit if they want users on High Sierra's successor to use them with full support.

So for now, it looks like existing 32-bit apps will continue to run on macOS. The warning message read "This app needs to be updated by its developer to improve compatibility".

If you have a 32-bit app, check with the developer to see if an update is available.

In HMD's defense, it is quite unusual for manufacturers to roll out major Android updates for midrange and entry level devices. Android's Instant Apps helps the Nokia 3's optimised battery to last longer by limiting background app use.

Apple is killing off macOS support for 32-bit apps later this year.

Apple notes that 64-bit apps are able to access more memory and use newer technologies, like its Metal graphics acceleration. "No" means the app is 32-bit and needs to be updated, while "Yes" means it is 64-bit and will work just fine without further action from the developer.

"To ensure that the apps you purchase are as advanced as the Mac you run them on, all future Mac software will eventually be required to be 64-bit", the support page says.

With the new alert dialogue in macOS 10.13.4 going live, Apple is now informing customers about the upcoming requirement for 64-bit apps sometime in the future as well. When you select an individual application, you will see a field titled "64-bit (Intel)". They can also potentially handle processor requests more efficiently than their 32-bit counterparts. "Using 32-bit software has no adverse effects on your data or your computer". Since then, Apple has been working with developers to optimize apps for 64-bit computing.

When will the 64-bit transition be complete?

"Yes" indicates 64-bit; "No" indicates 32-bit. The bar on 32-bit iOS apps was one of the key reasons the number of iOS apps in the App Store fell a year ago. At the same time, it'll be easier for Apple to maintain the apps.

Keep following us to get the next update from Apple on this matter. Though the company hasn't been equally aggressive with the Mac users yet, given the warnings have already started it, won't be long before 32-bit takes its last breath on the Mac's as well.
