Facebook is $24 billion richer after Mark Zuckerberg's testimony to Congress

It's too soon to tell whether these words will come back to haunt him

Zuckerberg was called to appear in front of a house of US Senators who were trying to decide whether Congress should intervene with regulations on Facebook. However, he warned lawmakers about creating regulations tougher to follow for smaller companies.

During his two-day marathon testimony in Washington this week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg looked particularly uncomfortable answering basic questions about how Facebook tracks people when they're not using Facebook.

17% of respondents said they deleted the Facebook app from their phone over privacy concerns.

Investors in other social media stocks are enjoying a bump too. But Facebook doesn't asks them.

"Diamond and Silk was deemed "unsafe". It wasn't clear which direction they were heading specifically.

Zuckerberg said the left also complains to the company, claiming censorship of their views.

Zuckerberg in his testimony in front of the USA lawmakers agreed that Facebook tracks internet users through hundreds of millions of web pages.

Zuckerberg demurred that he didn't know what a shadow profile is, and to be fair, it's not a term Facebook uses, at least publicly.

While it doesn't make up for anything, Facebook now offers users the opportunity to see whether you or a friend have accessed the app, and whether your information could have been collected.

His office is in the process of requesting more information from Facebook, but has not made a decision to launch an investigation.

"What we saw at these hearings is that he is resisting changing the business model of Facebook, which is based entirely on harvesting user data and taking that data and use that data to help target ads", David McCabe, a tech reporter with Axios, told Al Jazeera. The app vacuumed up not just the data of the people who took it, but also - thanks to Facebook's loose restrictions - data from their friends, too, including details that they hadn't meant to share publicly.

However, he rejected suggestions from Congress members that Facebook users did not have enough control over their data. Edward Markey of MA on Tuesday.

The Indian government had sent notices to both the companies seeking detailed explanation on any possible misuse of profile data of Indians to influence their voting behaviour. He took over after the previous CEO, Alexander Nix, was suspended last month.

But not all lawmakers were on board with new hurdles for businesses.

That makes up almost all of Zuckerberg's total net worth - good enough to make him the seventh richest person in the world, according to real-time data tracked by Forbes. "We're getting ready to overreact".

He also conceded Mr Durbin's point was a fair one.
