Australian woman jailed for scamming money by pretending to have cancer

Man jailed for cheating woman of $8,700

Hanna Dickenson accepted $31,000 after telling her parents that she needed medical treatment overseas, the BBC reported.

Dickenson pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining property by deception in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

Describing her offence as "despicable", a court in the state of Victoria sentenced Dickenson, now a real estate agent, to three months in jail, 150 hours of community work and treatment for mental health issues and substance abuse.

Hanna Dickenson had raised NZ$43,976 since she was 19 by convincing friends and family she had a rare cancer called soft tissue sarcoma.

Swan Hill couple Nathan and Rachel Cue were told Hanna had only weeks to live. He said they were arguing earlier about his suspicions that she was dating another man. "We need forty grand desperately". When this proved insufficient, they turned to their friends for help.

Dickenson's boisterous online social life showed her out partying and on overseas trips.

The court was told one person donated A$10,000 to Dickenson after being discharged from hospital following his own cancer treatment.

"Ms Dickenson has engaged in conduct that tears at the very heartstrings of human nature."

It smacks of a Walter Mitty lifestyle.

Melbourne Magistrates Court heard that Hanna Dickenson was partying hard and needed money to live a party lifestyle, involving drugs, alcohol, and worldwide holidays.

One of Dickenson's victims grew suspicious and went to the police after investigating her Facebook page.

Peter Bell, who ran the Enfields franchise in Northampton, was last May sentenced to 26 months in jail after stealing £92,000 from tenants and landlords.

He has now been given until May 14 to pay the sum of £22,000 to his victims.

Gibson chronicled her battle with cancer on a blog, The Whole Pantry, which spawned an app and recipe book.

The magistrate disagreed, saying the detail of Ms Gibson's case was different and dealt with in a different jurisdiction.
