Zuckerberg says Facebook could have done more to prevent misuse

Mr. Zuckerberg goes to Washington Facebook chief's first day of testimony on Capitol Hill

The Facebook co-founder faced a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees.

Believing that both the guilty parties had erased the data, Facebook decided not to inform the users, as it was a closed chapter.

This is just the latest in a string of data privacy-related issues the world's largest social network is dealing with.

The senators, who were grilling Mark about Facebook's role in the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, also opened themselves up to ridicule - with some pretty unbelievable questions.

He said: "There are a great many Americans who I will say are deeply concerned that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship".

But during the tough questioning, social media users likened Zuckerberg's lack of expression and emotion to a robot.

Zuckerberg: "Senator, no I would probably not choose to do that publicly here".

"It's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm..." his testimony continued.

Social media users also livened up the slow Senate committee hearing with references to the movie about Facebook, The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg.

"The most important thing I care about right now is making sure no one interferes in the various 2018 elections around the world", he testified before a 44-Senator panel. When the company rolled out its app platform in 2007, the company explained to users that when they installed an app they'd be able to share not only their own information, but that of their friends as well, he said. "We did this because the website may have misused some of your Facebook information by sharing it with a company called Cambridge Analytica", the notification reads.

Mr Zuckerberg said he had not seen them, and they were the responsibility of the app review team.

Zuckerberg is scheduled to again testify, this time before a House panel, on Wednesday.

Numerous Senators on the panel did, however, question whether users were giving informed consent; in other words, whether they knew what they were agreeing to.

His notes, which the AP said were "briefly visible" to one of its photographers, include bulleted lists with headings such as "accountability", "data security", "election integrity (Russia)" and "Defend Facebook". But, Kogan, unwittingly thinking it's legal, shared close to 87 million user data to data mining company Cambridge Analytica.

"Zuckerberg is conciliatory in his presentation", said Mariann Montagne, portfolio manager at Gradient Investments in Arden Hills, Minnesota.
