Why Israel's Government Coalition Could Be Headed For Collapse

Israeli Army Draft Bill Spat Could Spark Early Elections

The dispute centres on ultra-Orthodox parties having demanded that the conscription bill be passed before they agree to vote for the 2019 budget.

The leadership of Yisrael Beiteinu, a secular conservative party, announced that they would vote against the bill that was hashed out by their coalition partners of Likud (Netanyahu's party) and the religious United Torah Judaism (UTJ). It requires two more readings before becoming law, but those are likely to take place after the upcoming Knesset recess. "I have the deepest feelings about the United States", Netanyahu said.

Yet Liberman also signaled his willingness to remain in the coalition if Netanyahu allows Landver to retain the Immigration portfolio and if modifications are made to the draft bill by the time it is brought up for a final vote this summer.

According to the agreed deal, the conscription bill will now be frozen until the Knesset returns from its recess in mid-April, when a government bill drafted by the Defense Ministry will be proposed and merged with the Ben Tzur bill, taking the army's personnel needs into account as the Knesset takes up once again the question of ultra-Orthodox draft exemptions.

Addressing opposition MKs, he told them that they "want the government to remain because [they're] afraid of elections". Either the defense minister tells Sofa Landver to abstain in the vote on the Draft Law, or the prime minister decides not to fire Sofa Landver, even if she votes against it.

At a meeting on Sunday, influential rabbis reportedly chose to stick by the demand that a bill on the military exemption be approved before the budget is passed while rejecting compromise legislation that had been proposed.

Robert Ilatov, another Yisrael Beytenu MK, similarly said the party would oppose the bill and added that the compromise deal was "irrelevant". Opinion polls have shown Netanyahu and his Likud Party gaining popularity as the scandals have mounted.

Should Lieberman and his party quit, Netanyahu's coalition could in theory continue with a one-seat majority in parliament.

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon is meanwhile insisting that the budget be approved before the end of this week.

Netanyahu has however signalled that he does not want to do so, calling it unsustainable.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened up about spending part of his childhood in America during an in-depth interview with LevinTV host Mark Levin on his new Fox News program, "Life, Liberty & Levin".

Netanyahu could call for early elections, both as a way to shore up his narrow coalition and affirm his public standing in the face of multiple corruption charges.

Investigators last month recommended to prosecutors that Netanyahu be indicted in at least two corruption cases against him.
