Geoscientists Find Mind-Blowing 'Alien Ice' Trapped in a Diamond

Scientists Discover New Kind of Ice Inside Diamonds 0 By Denis Bedoya

The discovery of Ice-VII in the diamonds is the first known natural occurrence of the aqueous fluid from the deep mantle. Its molecules, unlike those in a simple ice (Ice-I), have a cubic molecular shape. The pressure in the mantle is intense, causing diamonds to form from carbon. These are conditions that can only exist in Earth's mantle, several hundreds of feet below the surface, in an extremely hot area known as the transition zone, as noted by Science Alert. Thanks to the find, ice-VII has now officially been recognized as a mineral by the International Mineralogical Association. Other known sites of its existence are Jupiter's moon Europa, and Saturn's moons Titan and Enceladus. According to the researchers, who published their findings in Science, the ice was found accidentally, preserved in a diamond among samples of material extracted from the Earth's mantle. The necessary pressure to create it can be found on Earth, but our planet is mostly too warm to form Ice-VII, let alone keep it stable. Rarely, substances such as water get trapped inside. Increase the pressure after amplification, and the atoms will move to the ice-III, then IV, V, VI and VII.Once it reaches a phase of ice-VII structure remains quite stable even with increasing pressure.

"They crack and whatever inclusions they had in them are lost".

As the name suggests, there are a few kinds of ice that recognize our common assortment of solidified water from Ice-VII, every more thick than the last.

The super-dense ice-vii was discovered by a team of geoscientists from the University of Nevada, led by Dr. Oliver Tschauner.

"Water in diamonds is not unknown, but finding this very high pressure form of water ice intact, that was really fortuitous", said Tschauner.
