Trump Had Cheat Cards Telling Him to Listen to Shooting Victims

U.S. President Donald Trump hosts a Public Safety Medal of Valor awards ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington U.S

He says he doesn't want every teacher and administrator carrying a gun - only those with previous training, like members of law enforcement or the military.

A day after an emotional meeting with survivors of the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in which 17 students were killed by fellow student Nikolas Cruz, President Trump tweeted the notion that "highly-trained teachers" could carry guns as a deterrent to school attackers.

He spoke at length about how armed teachers and security guards could frighten off potential school shooters.

"We have to harden our schools, not soften them".

The president was referring to comments he made on Wednesday during a White House listening session with victims and survivors of school shootings, including last week's attack in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.

Many students view the Parkland shooting as part of inaction by lawmakers to curb access to guns. Trump said teachers would be able to fire immediately if a "savage sicko" tried to attack a school.

Trump added: "Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this". "When you say this school is gun free..."

The president is still trying to hash out his response to last week's school shooting in Florida, throwing out ideas like arming teachers and "hardening" schools, a proposal that the National Rifle Association approves. I want certain highly adept people - people that understand weaponry, people that understand guns, if they really have that aptitude.

US president backs "arming teachers" in schools
Around 40 people, including school students and victims' families were invited to meet the President on Wednesday. He backed that up by saying it was "much less expensive than the guards" and would more effective.

"Bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence", National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen Garcia told Education Week. "They'd go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gun free zone", Mr. Trump said Wednesday.

He added that it should not be easier to shoot up a school than a bank or a jewellery store and claimed: "The elites don't care not one whit about America's school system and school children".

Eskelsen Garcia, the NEA president, said what is needed are "solutions that will keep guns out of the hands of those who want to use them to massacre innocent children and educators".

"We are going to be very strong on background checks, we are doing very strong background checks, very strong emphasis on the mental health", he said.

President Trump continues to seemingly talk out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to the subject of arming teachers with guns in classrooms. "Are those teachers going to be strategically placed around the school?"

A number of Republicans are interested in the other proposals - background checks, mental-health screening, and banning bump stocks. During a White House press briefing held shortly after Trump's event ended, Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah said that the Trump administration is definitely opposed to any new weapons ban, but beyond that, remains in "a listening phase".

Joseph Connelly, a high school physics and chemistry teacher, took to Twitter to argue against the idea.
