Sore Loser? Canadian Hockey Olympian Yanks Silver Medal Off Neck in Disgust

Olympic results USA-Finland women's hockey

Entering the 2018 Winter Olympics as the heavy gold medal-favorite, Canada's women's hockey team bulldozed its way into the final Canada had won the gold medal in the last four Winter Olympics.

Although she didn't wear it during the ceremony or in interviews afterward, Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported an official from the Olympic Ice Hockey Federation talked to her and explained she can't "legally" refuse to wear the medal.

"Once we reflect. But now, not at the moment", she said.

Canadian hockey player Jocelyne Larocque wore her silver medal for all of 2 seconds during a ceremony Thursday after a tough shootout loss to the USA team at the Winter Olympics.

It was an intense game filled with penalties, ending in a shootout and a 3-2 victory for the US over Canada.

Some members of the team wept on the ice. The game went through a scoreless 20-minute overtime period, per Olympic regulations, and was eventually decided in a shootout. I meant no disrespect - it has been an honour to represent my country and win a medal for Canada. In the moment, I was disappointed with the outcome of the game, and my emotions got the better of me.

The motion comes at a time when relations between the Netherlands and Turkey are stressed. It "noted" that the Dutch government would not abide by the parliament's decision.

A short while later, Larocque was faced with questions from the press.

Canada's Jocelyne Larocque took off her silver medal immediately after receiving it. As soon as the Olympic official placed the medal around her neck, she promptly removed the second-place hardware.

Larocque reportedly left the ice to Americans chanting, "put your medal on", but remained steadfast in her protest. "We're going for gold and I'm proud of this whole team, but we were chasing that gold medal, and. yeah".

Larocque's actions was met with a wave of displeasure from people saying she was being "unsportsmanlike".

She seemed to be warming up to the idea of a silver medal, however.

And yet, we can all understand why she did what she did. We are very fortunate that we are on the other end of it.
