N Korea to send delegation for closing ceremony of Pyeongchang Games

A state of Kims The family tree of North Korea's ruling Kim dynasty

U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump may come face to face with a top North Korean general, as both are set to attend the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea this weekend.

Ivanka had wanted to meet female defectors in their teens and 20s, according to a campaigner for human rights in the North.

Thursday also saw U.S. Vice President Mike Pence criticize the media's coverage of Kim Yo Jong - the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - during her attendance at the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang earlier in February.

Pence had earlier denounced the North's "murderous regime", and United States officials have since said that the North Koreans later cancelled a meeting that had been scheduled for the following day.

He is believed to have once led the North's Reconnaissance General Bureau handling Pyongyang's spying operations, and to have ordered a deadly torpedo attack on the South's corvette Cheonan in 2010 that left 46 sailors dead.

South Korean Yonhap News Agency called Kim a "hard-liner" whose inclusion in the Olympic delegation "is likely to stir up a controversy as he is blacklisted under Washington and Seoul's unilateral sanctions".

The North Korean U.N. mission asked Guterres to push the Security Council to welcome "the process of improved inter-Korean relations and discouraging neighboring countries from disturbing the process".

North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, vice chair of the Communist hermit nation's Party Central Committee, is scheduled to lead the delegation to South Korea in what is being viewed by senior US administration officials as yet another provocation by North Korea's hardline regime. In addition to the dinner which will feature a kosher menu for Ivanka's dietary restrictions, the Blue House has planned a small traditional Korean music performance for her delegation.

South Korea announced last week that it would allocate around $2.7 million to pay the costs of North Korea's Olympic delegation.

A meeting that was to have taken place between Vice President Pence and representatives of North Korea during the Winter Olympic Games fell apart when Pyongyang suddenly backed out, the State Department says.

North Korea has denied any involvement in the attack despite overwhelming evidence.

A State Department spokesperson on Thursday said the US hoped Kim would use his visit to the South to pay tribute to those killed in the sinking.

"For all the media fawning over the sister of the North Korean dictator, I think it's important that every American knows who this person is and what she's done", he told the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference. Pence tweeted. "And we will keep standing strong until North Korea stops threatening the United States and our allies - and abandons their nuclear and ballistic missile programs once and for all!" While the United States, along with most of their global allies, has remained firm in their foreign policy stance on North Korea, some felt that Pence's behavior was hypocritical in light of his criticism of National Football League athletes who took a knee in protest of police brutality in 2017.

"We stand up to murderous dictatorships".
