US indicts 13 Russian nationals for poll meddling

US President Donald Trump gives a thumbs-up as he walks to board Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's indictment of 13 Russian individuals and three organizations for allegedly interfering in the 2016 USA presidential election sets the stage for the prosecution of Americans who may have helped the Russian effort, some legal experts said.

The federal indictment, brought Friday by special counsel Robert Mueller, represents the most detailed allegations to date of illegal Russian meddling during the campaign that sent Trump to the White House.

He also argued that Russian authorities might begin to reconsider attempts to sway foreign elections, "because it's just not working".

Former Ambassador Sergei Kislyak said at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday: "I'm not sure that I can trust American law enforcement to be the most precise and truthful source of information about what Russians do".

At the same conference where McMaster acknowledged the "incontrovertible" evidence of interference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov downplayed the accusations in Mueller's latest indictment. He is a wealthy St. Petersburg businessman with ties to the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin.

Although President Trump has wavered publicly on whether or not Russian Federation interfered, his national security advisor says the indictment shows the USA is becoming "more and more adept at tracing the origins of this espionage and subversion". "The results of the election were not impacted", Trump tweeted. However, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told reporters that Mueller's investigation was continuing. US intelligence agencies have previously said the Russian government interfered to benefit Trump, including by orchestrating the hacking of Democratic emails, and Mueller has been assessing whether the campaign coordinated with the Kremlin. Will the president now acknowledge that interference and impose the sanctions? They used false personas and social media while also staging political rallies and communicating with "unwitting individuals" associated with the Trump campaign, it said.

"The ORGANIZATION sought, in part, to conduct what it called "information warfare against the United States of America" through fictitious USA personas on social media platforms and other Internet-based media", the indictment said.

Moscow has denied meddling in the election. They also received training on how to post during United States holidays.

The indictment doesn't appear to identify the person affiliated with the Texas group whom the Russians communicated with. "Vague accusations of this nature are harmful to the TNM and all Texas-based organizations who are engaged in the political process and can only serve to further erode the credibility of the Department of Justice and the Russian Federation probe". He laid out the basics of the indictments of 13 Russians and described the outlines of the effort to meddle in the 2016 election.

Richard "Ricky" Pinedo pleaded guilty to using stolen identities to set up bank accounts that were then used by the Russians. The president, of course, talked about the Russian hoax and even talked about the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Clinton campaign and the Obama White House, all of this was really an effort of them to undermine candidate Trump and President Trump.

The indictment, which also targeted a Russian organization called the Internet Research Agency, says Russians waged "information warfare" starting in 2014 and throughout the 2016 election with fake identities and social media accounts.

Trump entered the race in June 2015. Earlier this week, the special counsel reportedly reached a cooperation deal with Rick Gates, partner to ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

So did U.S. Sen. Two of the defendants allegedly traveled to the United States in 2014 to collect intelligence for their American political influence operations.

In September 2016, the group ordered one worker to "intensify criticizing Hillary Clinton" after a review found insufficient anti-Clinton activity. She points specifically to rallies funded by Russian Roubles on November 12th and 19th of 2016, in the days following the election.
