Egyptian police have arrested Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh, a leading opposition figure and former presidential candidate, over his alleged ties with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.
The state prosecutor ordered he be remanded in custody for 15 days and also instructed him to undergo medical checkups at the prison hospital after "he complained of exhaustion and sudden fatigue".
A prominent opposition figure, Aboul Fotouh led calls in January to boycott the upcoming presidential election, where President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is running against a sole competitor, Moussa Mostafa Moussa, who happens to be a staunch Sisi supporter.
The other Strong Egypt party leaders were later released, one of them said.
Abul Fotouh, 66, had been a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood since his university years in the late 1970s.
Lawyers for Abol Fotouh were not immediately available to comment on the Interior Ministry's allegations. He has not yet been charged.
The politician was once a leading member of the now blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood group of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, who was toppled by the military in July 2013 in response to mass protests.
"The arrest is completely warranted given Aboul Fotouh's connection to the Brotherhood, which remained unbroken despite his ostensible resignation from the group so he could run in the 2012 presidential election", said Tharwat El Kharbawy, a Cairo lawyer who was ejected from the Brotherhood for dissent over its tactics and policies.
