United Kingdom to unveil new tech to fight extremist content online

LONDON ENGLAND- FEBRUARY 08 Home Secretary Amber Rudd leaves Number 10 Downing Street following a Brexit sub-committee meeting

The technology in question was created by the Home Office and ASI Data Science and uses machine learning artificial intelligence to analyse audio and video and determine whether it contains any extremist content.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has unveiled a tool, which she claims, can detect extremist content and block it from view.

Unilever on Monday added its voice to those demanding action.

The Home Office and ASI said they would share the methodology behind the new model with smaller companies, in order to help combat the abuse of their platforms by terrorists and their supporters.

Numerous major tech companies have developed technology specific to their own platforms and have publicly reported on the difference this is making in their fight against terrorist content. "We know that automatic technology like this can heavily disrupt the terrorists actions, as well as prevent people from ever being exposed to these horrific images, " United Kingdom home secretary Amber Rudd said in reference to the new tool.

"We're not going to rule out taking legislative action if we need to do it", the home secretary was quoted by the BBC as saying.

"The goal of these videos is to incite violence in our communities, recruit people to their cause, and attempt to spread fear in our society", Ms Rudd said. There in northern California the politician will meet with various tech industry representatives, and USA government politicians, to discuss tackling terrorist content online. There are tools out there that can do exactly what we're asking for.

Facebook has previously said it partners with other tech firms, researchers and governments, to quickly identify and slow the spread of terrorist content online.

The tool was made as a way to demonstrate that the government's demand for a clampdown on extremist activity was not unreasonable, Rudd said.

A long-running theme of various British governments has been that tech giants have to do more to tackle extremism on their platforms. "Because we know that terrorist content isn't just a problem for the Facebooks and Googles of this world, but for smaller platforms too", Ms Rudd said.

In the particular case of Daesh online videos, it is reported that supporters of this group "used more than 400 unique online platforms to push out their poisonous material in 2017".

All five major United Kingdom terrorist attacks in 2017 had an "online component", Ms Rudd said, adding there was a need to prevent the material being uploaded online and radicalising people.
