Taylor Swift Shakes Off Copyright Lawsuit

Swift was sued in September by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who contended that "Shake It Off " infringes on their 2001 song "Playas Gon' Play", recorded by girl group 3LW.

The 28-year-old singer enjoyed massive chart success worldwide with the catchy tune, which includes the lines: "Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play/And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate".

For comparison purposes, Swift, in "Shake It Off" declares "The players gonna play, play, play, play, play and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate". Do they appear to be similar?

District Judge Michael Fitzgerald noted that if any copying had taken place, it was only for the "unprotected" lyrics of "Playas Gon' Play".

At the time of the lawsuit's filing, Swift's spokesperson said in a statement to TheWrap, "This is a ridiculous claim and nothing more than a money grab".

UK's Boris Johnson seeks to reassure Brexit skeptics
He will add: "I believe that would be a disastrous mistake that would lead to permanent and ineradicable feelings of betrayal".

We are thankful the lawsuit has been dismissed and Swift can now move on to bigger and better things, like her reputation stadium tour, kicking off in May.

The case was dismissed with leave to amend, but Fitzgerald advised the plaintiffs not to refile the suit unless there are as-yet-undiscovered similarities between the two songs. We can't wait to hear what you have to say.

Hall and Butler were given until February 26 to modify their complaints. They added, "The law is simple and clear". In 2015, R&B artist Jesse Graham issued a $42m lawsuit against Swift, claiming that her single stole the lyrics from his 2013 song Haters Gone Hate.

"By 2001, American popular culture was heavily steeped in the concepts of players, haters, and player haters", Fitzgerald wrote.
