Nanorobots successfully kill cancerous tumours

Cancer-fighting nanorobots can seek, destroy tumours

They then attached small bits of DNA created to specifically bind to molecules found in tumor cells which helps to guide these nanobots.

Dr. Hao Yan's laboratory, working with a research team headed by Yuliang Zhao, Ph.D., and Baoquan Ding, Ph.D., at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) in Beijing, China, describe the nanorobots in Nature Biotechnology, in a paper entitled "A DNA Nanorobot Functions as a Cancer Therapeutic in Response to a Molecular Trigger In Vivo".

The research comes after a team of scientists, involving Durham University, past year created nanorobots able to drill into and destroy cancer cells.

Dr James Tour of Rice University in the USA, who was involved in last year's breakthrough with Durham University, said the "spring-loaded" nanorobot was "exciting", adding: 'It is a nano-Trojan horse!'

"Thrombin is a naturally-occurring protein that causes blood clots to form", Professor Anderson said. These blood clots led to tumor-cell necrosis, resulting in smaller tumors and a better chance for survival compared to control mice. After attacking tumours, most of the nanorobots were cleared and degraded from the body after 24 hours.

Life expectancy in treated mice was 45 days, compared to 20.5 days in non-treated mice.

Punjab National Bank detects fraudulent transactions worth Rs 10000 crore
Natco Pharma tumbled 4.2 percent amid news of USFDA inspection at its API facility in Mekaguda, near Hyderabad. No official comments were available from the agency on the issue or the nature of the transaction.

First and foremost, the team showed that the nanorobots were safe and effective in shrinking tumors.

The DNA nanorobots have not yet been tested in humans, but they hold vast potential as a safe and effective method for killing tumors and treating cancer. The machines could be used for cancer therapy or to kill off cancer cells entirely. The same tests arrived at the same results when tried on Bama miniature pigs, which meant that the method still worked for bigger animals.

More importantly, there was no evidence of the devices spreading to the brain, where they could cause harmful side effects. "The thrombin delivery DNA nanorobot constitutes a major advance in the application of DNA nanotechnology for cancer therapy", Yan said.

Researchers said the technology behind the nanorobots could also be used to deliver a wide range of drugs and even multiple drugs at once.

Arizona State University and NCNST collaborators are actively pursuing clinical partners to further develop their technology. "Combinations of different rationally designed nanorobots carrying various agents may help to accomplish the ultimate goal of cancer research: the eradication of solid tumors and vascularized metastases. Furthermore, the current strategy may be developed as a drug-delivery platform for the treatment of other diseases by modification of the geometry of the nanostructures, the targeting groups and the loaded cargoes".
