Lena Dunham has full hysterectomy

Lena Dunham had her uterus and cervix removed to help her battle with endometriosis

GIRLS star Lena Dunham has revealed she's had a full hysterectomy at 31 years old after battling endometriosis for years. She said she didn't feel that she had these choices when she was coping with the uncertainty that comes with endometriosis.

Dunham revealed the muscles around the sacral nerves that allow her to walk are interrupted by her ovaries. The entire area is surrounded by scar tissue, making her question if having a child is even a possibility.

Lena Dunham underwent a major surgery to relieve herself of pain. Let's please not even talk about my uterine lining. Despite all of the bad news, the organ is "shaped like a heart".

The "Girls" star has battled chronic pain stemming from her endometriosis diagnosis for years and made a final bid to end that pain by having the medical procedure, where she had her cervix and uterus removed.

Dunham, who is adapting the United Kingdom show "Camping" for an HBO series starring Jennifer Garner, said she would still like to have children.

Lena Dunham attends Variety's Power Of Women event on Friday. She shared the news of her hysterectomy in the March 2018 edition of Vogue. She chose to remove her reproductive organs to end the pain once and for all. Weeks later, however, she suffered complications from the procedure and had to be rushed to the hospital following a red carpet appearance at the 2017 Met Gala. She thought it was all over last April, when she announced she was free of endometriosis after surgery to separate her ovaries from her rectal wall.

Lena has been repeatedly hospitalised and undergone multiple surgeries to try and treat the condition, which sees layers of tissue grow outside the uterus instead of inside.

Experts say the lack of research and funding for a disease that affects one in 10 women of reproductive age is a scandal. So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted.

Despite now being free of endometriosis, the actress is unable to carry a child.

There are various treatment options for sufferers of the condition, including non-surgical pain management and surgical options that can include the removal of organs.

Dunham shares the revelation in a personal essay, titled "The Painful Truth", from the upcoming March issue of Vogue.
