Turkish troops killed in deadliest day of Kurdish offensive in Syria

Turkey accused of recruiting retraining IS fighters to attack Afrin

A U.S. military official said the US-led coalition that still assists Kurdish-led forces in the hunt for surviving IS members in eastern Syria killed at least 100 pro-regime fighters overnight.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced earlier that a military helicopter was "downed" in the Afrin operation.

Violence also flared in eastern Syria on Thursday, where the US-led coalition said it had killed at least 100 pro-regime fighters to fend off an attack on its Kurdish allies.

Kino Gabriel, spokesman for the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said to Reuters news agency that YPG has reached an understanding with the Assad regime.

The Turkish military has confirmed the deaths of the two soldiers since the announcement was made.

"From 2011 until now, there has never been the level of bombardment we've seen in the last 96 hours", said Hamza, one of doctors treating the wounded.

On Jan. 20, Turkey launched an air and ground offensive in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), targeting the YPG and their all-female brigade, the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), in the Afrin region.

The visit came amid escalating tensions of the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies over Turkey's attack in Afrin, Syria.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has urged urgent worldwide action, saying the past week in Syria "has been one of the bloodiest periods of the entire conflict".

Eastern Ghouta is home to an estimated 400,000 people who have lived under crippling government siege since 2013.

Numerous rockets and mortars continue to be fired from opposition-held areas into populated areas of Government-held capital Damascus and surrounding suburbs, with at least seven civilians reported killed and 18 others injured in various locations between 6 and 9 February.

He stated: "The past week has been one of the bloodiest periods of the entire conflict, with wave after wave of deadly airstrikes leading to civilian casualties in areas of Eastern Ghouta and Idlib".

There were also reports of the government using toxic agents in residential areas. "Even by Syria's atrocious standards, these are exceptionally deplorable developments".

Bombing raids continued on Friday morning, leaving at least another six civilians dead, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Calling for "urgent worldwide action" to protect civilians, Zeid also slammed what he called an "epic failure of global diplomacy" to end the seven-year-old war.

"The Secretary-General stresses once again that all concerned in Syria and the region have a responsibility and must abide by global law and relevant Security Council resolutions".
