Maldives State of Emergency Undermines Democracy — UN Official

Maldives has reached out to "friendly countries" to garner support after the recent proclamation of emergency by Yameen.

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has publicly called on the government to arrest former President Mohamed Nasheed using Interpol.

He was responding to questions on the current situation in Maldives.

Nasheed, who has been living in self exile in Sri Lanka for the past few months, had made multiple appeals to India to intervene militarily in the archipelago country, saying that seeking an internal solution to the ongoing crisis could lead to chaos.

India's move comes amid China softening its position on Delhi's role in Maldives.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein has condemned the state of emergency imposed by the president of the Maldives as an "all-out assault on democracy" and a violation of peoples' rights.

Rishmawi said a state of emergency can be legally proclaimed if the life of the nation is threatened.

Zeid said the suspension of constitutional guarantees in the Maldives has created a risky concentration of power in the hands of President Abdulla Yameen. "So, it is a very worrying sign for a small country of islands like the Maldives and we are extremely concerned", she said.

In a statement, it called on all parties to respect the rule of law, independence of the judiciary and to take into account the overall interest of their country to avoid any untoward incident, which could undermine the peace and stability in the country.

After a tense stand-off between President Yameen and the Maldives Supreme Court, Yameen had the Chief Justice and another judge arrested, and declared a national emergency for 15 days. The latest showdown between President Abdullah Yameen and Supreme Court came after the Supreme Court ordered the removal of criminal charges against nine opposition leaders, which included former exiled President Nasheed, who was in 2015 sentenced for 13 years of imprisonment on terrorism charges.
