Kim Jong Un invited South Korean president to North Korea, Seoul says

North Korea leader Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo-jong, was in attendance alongside South Korea's president Moon Jae-in and North Korea's nominal head of state, Kim Yong-nam.

The two sides discussed inter-Korean relations, reports say news agency, and Moon responded to the invitation by saying: "Let us make it happen by creating the necessary conditions in the future".

U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults and threats of nuclear war as tensions rose, with Trump repeatedly dismissing the prospect or value of talks with North Korea. He did not attend the state dinner, which was attended by Kim Jong Un's sister.

He also did not shake hands with Kim Yong Nam while making a brief appearance at a leaders' reception ahead of the ceremony - although Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose country is also regularly threatened by Pyongyang, did so, while exchanging pleasantries with the North Korean.

At the opening ceremonies Friday, Pence sat stone-faced in his seat as Moon and North Korean officials stood together with much of the stadium to applaud their joint team of athletes. Her presence is the latest move in an extraordinary show of Olympic diplomacy with Seoul that could prove to be a major challenge to the Trump administration's hard-line Korea policies.

Despite Pence's hardline stance and words, he has also signaled the United States is possibly open to negotiations when he said in regards to the North Korean officials, "I haven't requested any meeting".

Last month, the North agreed with South Korea to send 22 athletes and a 230-strong cheering squad to the winter Games.

A dialogue between North Korea and the U.S. is among actions that would improve the atmosphere for a meeting, Yonhap reported, citing an unidentified Blue House official.

"It was a very emotional moment to get finally there after many years of hard work and many negotiations still taking place here", the German said the morning after the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

'Having these red communists in the heart of Seoul is an utter humilation!' one protester shouted near the venue as dozens of others waved banners condemning both Moon and Kim Jong Un.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile programme", Pence told reporters during the return flight.

Pence had travelled to the Olympics to counter what Washington said was the North's crude attempts to hijack the Games with a propaganda campaign.
