A five-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital after he was rescued from the River Braid in Ballymena.

He was a pupil at Harryville Primary School in Ballymena and the school has paid tribute to him on social media.

"In a statement, parents Darrel and Leanne Fleck said Kayden was your average wee boy" and along with his twin brother Jayden they we "the two musketeers".

The child fell into the Braid River and was not seen for a short period of time after.

CRS regional commander Sean McCarry said the child had been "swept away quite fast with it (the river)" and that "he was travelling quite a distance".

The child was then flown to Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, where he died of his injuries sustained.

Earlier, the NIAS spokesman said: "The thoughts of all involved in the rescue are with the young boy and his family".

He was dragged out more than 45 minutes later near Tullaghgarley and airlifted to hospital.

Police launched a large-scale search operation around the Braid River on Saturday to try and rescue the child.

A statement released by the PSNI on behalf of Mr and Mrs Fleck added: "The family want to thank each of the agencies who were involved in the search and rescue operation yesterday, and say they are grateful for the community support they have received since".
