Corrects that original tweet was Sunday not Saturday and that Auerbach was the first to hire an African-American coach, not 'fire.'Boston police are facing heavy criticism online for a now-deleted Twitter post for Black History Month that celebrated a white man.
In the tweet, posted Sunday night, the police chose to give a shout-out to Auerbach for giving African-Americans opportunities in basketball.
The tweet also honored Auerbach for fielding "an all African-American starting five in 1964 and [hiring] the league's 1st African-American head coach (Bill Russell) in 1966", according to screenshots posted on Twitter.
A few hours later, around midnight, the department apologized for the original tweet. Former city councilor Tito Jackson was among those who used social media to criticize the tweet.
