Three Britons who died when a helicopter crashed in the Grand Canyon have been named.

A spokeman for the Hualapai Nation Police Department said the three who lost their lives are Becky Dobson, 27, Jason Hill, 32, and Stuart Hill, 30.

They were airlifted to University Medical Centre in Las Vegas, Nevada, along with pilot Scott Booth, according to Arizona Central.

Hualapai Police chief Francis Bradley said: "It's a very tragic incident".

Bradley said rescue efforts were hindered by high winds, darkness and extremely rugged terrain where the crash is located.

National Weather Service meteorologists in Flagstaff and Phoenix said wind conditions were an estimated 10 miles per hour with gusts of 20 miles per hour around the time of the crash.

The aircraft sustained substantial damage, Kenitzer said.

Teddy Fujimoto told CNN affiliate KSNV he was in the area taking photographs when he witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

He said he then heard two or three small explosions where the wreckage was, about 600ft (183m) below from where he was standing. One of the survivors ... looked all bloody.

"The ladies were screaming ..."

Allen Kenitzer with the FAA Office of Communications confirmed in an email that the helicopter, a Eurocopter EC130, "crashed under unknown circumstances in the Grand Canyon".

The helicopter was operated by tour company Papillon Airways.

On its website, Papillon calls itself "the world's largest aerial sightseeing company" and says it flies more than 600,000 people a year. It also notes that it "abides by flight safety rules and regulations that substantially exceed the regulations required by the Federal Aviation Administration". "Our top priority is the care and needs of our passengers and our staff", Papillon Group CEO Brenda Halvorson said Sunday.

Three people killed in today's Grand Canyon helicopter crash were from the United Kingdom, according to authorities in Arizona. The pilot and five passengers died.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
