'Voice of a leader' - Meryl Streep backs Oprah for president again

'Voice of a leader' - Meryl Streep backs Oprah for president again

It is as simple as that. The mission of a newspaper is the welfare of the people.

Director Steven Spielberg uses the case to show how Katharine Graham dealt with a crisis of conscience - does she listen to her editor, Ben Bradlee, and publish the controversial documents regarding American involvement in Vietnam or does she keep the peace with her friends, many of whom are insiders in Richard Nixon's White House? At the same time, Graham finds herself largely occupied with the cause of making the Post a public company. More importantly, she would be long gone before the newspaper would pass on to Amazon and Jeff Bezos.

Tom Hanks (as Ben Bradlee) and Meryl Streep (as Kay Graham) star in Twentieth Century Fox's "The Post". In his mind, the story always comes first. Both films are about the search for truth, the verification of sources and the inevitable pushback from people, often in places of authority, who do not wish to fully inform the public. It would be nice if Trump's staffers, when they watch the movie, take the story's lessons to heart. He sees a chance for his regional paper to claw onto an equal footing with more prestigious rival publications in New York City, Chicago, and Boston. The news shocked people: that four successive US presidents (of both parties) kept from the American people the truth that the war in Viet Nam was unwinnable, all the while requiring more young men to go and fight, and often die, in that war. At a time when "fake news" is bandied about as a way to undercut the profession, it's great to see why reporters do what they do. Inserted as a military strategist under the Pentagon's Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs John McNaughton, he's observing the war first hand.

Graham has the final say in whether the paper publishes the Pentagon Papers - sensitive and damning government information on the Vietnam War.

Winfrey was the recipient of the Golden Globes' annual Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, and used her acceptance speech to discuss race, gender and the fight for equality. It's fitting of Streep's current role in Hollywood's #MeToo moment.

Besides being publisher of the influential newspaper, Graham was well connected with leading political figures, and luminaries regularly attended dinner parties at her Georgetown home. She is just having trouble with navigating the business world and what being good at that means in her personal life. The film was also snubbed in all categories at the British Academy Film Awards. Maybe you've heard of him?

Trump Again Waives Iran Sanctions

Steven Spielberg needs your support. Still, the power of this tale and the timing of its release makes The Post necessary viewing. Though you can - at times - nearly smell the ink on the freshly printed newspapers, Spielberg does this one in a more paint-by-numbers fashion than director Tom McCarthy did with the nail-biting Spotlight or Alan Pakula did with the now classic Watergate thriller All the President's Men.

"I love men", said Streep, noting the speeches of Hanks and "Call Me By Your Name" star Timothee Chalamet, the breakthrough actor victor. So, before the obvious comparisons between 2017 and 1971, it was the Katherine Graham story and then eventually the Ben Bradlee-Katherine Graham relationship.

I give The Post 5 out of 5 overpriced cups of lemonade without vodka.

"The Post" opened in limited theaters across the country last month and is readying its wide release for Friday, but it's already received a lot of praise for its portrayal of the very true story about the revelation of a long-spanning United States government cover-up.

But it's so rare to see real events portrayed in such an entertaining manner that it sometimes feels as if Spielberg (even better with "Bridge of Spies" and "Lincoln") is the only one even attempting to do so.
