USA can not undermine Iran nuclear deal: Rouhani

Trump is also urging Congress to reform United States law so the president is no longer required to declare every 90 days whether he thinks Iran is in compliance, or to renew sanctions waivers every 120 or 180 days.

Iran said on Saturday it would retaliate against the new sanctions, although it did not specify how.

But Trump argues that Obama gave away too much to Iran in sanctions relief, without forcing the Islamic republic to end its ballistic missile program and support for militant groups.

The 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was signed by the United States under the previous administration of president Barack Obama as well as Iran, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

"In what we heard yesterday, I don't see any invitation for Iran to enter dialogue", he said.

Trump said he would waive nuclear sanctions against Iran but only as a "last chance" and would not do so again.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had earlier said on Twitter that the deal was "not renegotiable" and that Trump's move "amounts to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement".

Trump stops imposition of nuke sanctions vs Iran
Trump signed a waiver keeping the USA sanctions that would scuttle the deal suspended for another 120 days. Under the accord, Iran slowed its nuclear programme in exchange for an easing of global economic sanctions.

Trump has already declared that he thinks the Iran nuclear deal is no longer in the United States' national interest.

The US also declared sanctions against 14 entities and people, including Iran's head of judiciary Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani.

But the officials also want the triggers to include Iran's growing ballistic missile program, which was not part of the nuclear deal, and to remove sunset clauses that allow some nuclear restrictions to ease or phase out over time. Officials, congressional aides and outside administration advisers said had the president would likely extend the sanctions waivers, citing progress in amending US legislation that governs Washington's participation in the deal.

"If at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately", he added.

European allies had strongly urged the White House to stick with the nuclear deal, saying a decision to abandon it would strain the transatlantic partnership.

"So Trump now has issued explicit May deadline to Congress and Europeans: Fix Iran nuke deal or no more sanctions waivers", wrote Mark Dubowitz, head of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies.

The deal on Iran's nuclear program was reached between Iran and six global mediators (the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France) on July 14, 2015.
