'The Walking Dead' Renewed for Season 9

The zombie drama has been renewed for a ninth season, AMC announced ahead of their presentation at Saturday's Television Critics Association press day.

Season 8 of The Walking Dead continues on February 25, picking up where the series left off in 2017 with a major character's death looming - one that The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has since. With the renewal, the network is promoting showrunner Scott M. Gimple to chief content officer for the franchise, where he'll oversee both The Walking Dead, and Fear the Walking Dead as well as other "potential brand extensions". Angela Kang, who's been with the show since 2011 and is now a co-executive producer, will take over as "TWD's" showrunner for Season 9. Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott's broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe.

Fans can expect even bigger things to happen in the next season starting with major changes and additions to the cast and crew. Immediately after its premiere, the entire first season of the series will be available on the network's AMC Premiere premium service, according to AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios President Charlie Collier. "I know I speak for Angela, Scott and everyone at AMC when I say thanks most of all to the fans and the many talented people who have helped AMC play 'Dead'". Showrunner Scott Gimple is out (and moving up, more on that in a sec) and co-executive producer Angela Kang is in. The next-closest competitor this season, "The Big Bang Theory", is almost a full point behind it at 2.9.

Gimple is hardly being fired by The Walking Dead- quite the opposite. This move also means that The Walking Dead ship needs a new captain, and Gimple has passed the torch to Angela Kang. "Angela is a big part of the heart and soul of 'The Walking Dead, ' and I'm thrilled to help facilitate her vision of the show's next era". In season 3 she became a producer, and was again promoted to co-executive producer in season 5. And as for Kang, who began as a writer on the show in 2011 and quickly ascended the producing ranks, fans are surely counting on her to bring new life to the dead.
