California mudslides leave 18 dead as rescue workers dig for survivors

A member of the Long Beach Search and Rescue team looks for survivors in a car in Montecito

"There's been plenty of cases where they've found people a week after", Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason said. The mud never got above their thighs and after about an hour of huddling in a hallway, he led his folks and dog outside where a passing firetruck took them to safety.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office this week identified the 18 killed, citing the cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries resulting from flash floods with mudslides. Walls of mud and debris cascaded down hillsides stripped of trees and shrubs by last month's wildfires, including the Thomas Fire, the largest blaze in the state's history.

Much of the focus of Thursday's search will be on areas where rescue crews had yet to reach, said Amber Anderson, a public information officer for the multi-agency response team handling the disaster.

The seven missing people included Fabiola Benitez, the mother of Jonathan Benitez, a 10-year-old killed in the flooding.

Teams rescued three people Wednesday, but they also discovered two more bodies, raising the death count to 17, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said.

The number of people who remain missing was corrected Thursday morning by officials after an early update stated that the number had jumped to 48 overnight.

Passengers safe after Turkish plane goes off runway metres away from sea
An airplane has skidded off the runway after landing in the Turkish province of Trabzon, causing panic among the passengers. Flights resumed at the Trabzon International Airport on Sunday, after being temporarily suspended following the incident.

"It is a massive operation that we have underway, still in the search and rescue mode, as mentioned, but as we transition and will transition to a recovery mode, we realize that this is going to be a long and hard journey for all of us and for our community", he said.

"Sunday night, Portia and I got a call that we're under mandatory evacuation again with most of the community of Montecito", she said during her show.

From above, the debris flow appears as a near-endless swath of brown, interrupted occasionally by the roof tiles of inundated homes and clouds of smoke from smoldering structures. Utility crews began the laborious task of repairing downed power lines and snapped telephone poles. Elsewhere, cars were perched on mounds of earth and garage doors had caved in.

The backbreaking work went on under the sunny skies that have made the stretch of Santa Barbara County coast about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles a haven for the wealthy, celebrities and tourists drawn to its scenery and casual vibe. "So our missing list is down to five", Brown said. U.S. Route 101, California's primary coastal route, remains partially shut down.

Residents of the mudslide-hit area were assessing their damaged homes, with some grateful their properties had survived.

Prior to hopping on the phone with Oprah, Ellen, visibly upset during the show, told her audience: "After everything we've been through I think a lot of people thought they were just being overly cautious, but exactly what they feared happened".
