British premier Theresa May completes cabinet reshuffle amid criticism

Prime Minister Theresa May leads her first cabinet meeting of the new year

May said: "This Government is about building a country fit for the future - one that truly works for everyone with a stronger economy and a fairer society".

In an embarrassing twist to a reshuffle beset with social media mistakes, Jeremy Hunt, who was kept on as Health Secretary with an extended social care role in the shake-up, was forced to explain why he had "liked" a tweet stating that Ms Greening had left the Government.

"Today's figures remind us how important it is to make sure that young people from low and middle income backgrounds also have access to the best schools and the best universities that will enable them to get to the top of so many of our professions which remain largely the preserve of the privately educated".

Damian Hinds took the role of education secretary.

The Fareham MP was elected in 2015 and is the daughter of immigrants from Kenya and Mauritius.

Among those leaving were education minister Robert Goodwill and Mark Garnier, the worldwide trade minister.

Last month, an investigation found Mr Garnier did not breach ministerial code over allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards a female member of staff, including asking her to buy a sex toy.

No 10 sources said Mrs May is "disappointed" but respects Ms Greening's decision to leave the Government.

Among those joining the ministerial ranks for the first time are Richmond MP Rishi Sunak at the Ministry of Housing, Stratford-on-Avon MP Nadhim Zahawi at the Department for Education and South East Cambridgeshire's Lucy Frazer, who is joining the justice team.

Philip Davies MP said: "It certainly does not do anyone any favours to promote people who are not ready for promotion just due to their gender or race". She is able to claim, as planned, to have upped the numbers of women in government and new ministers from ethnic minorities.

And while a reshuffle that didn't move the biggest names in government may well not have much impact on the public, the bungled moves have certainly been noticed in Westminster, and with Brexit negotiations getting back up and running, will of course be noticed in Brussels too.

But the most senior members of the Cabinet - foreign secretary Boris Johnson, chancellor Philip Hammond, home secretary Amber Rudd and Brexit secretary David Davis - are all expected to remain in place.

Justine Greening - MP for Putney, Roehampton and Southfields - has resigned from Theresa May's government following today's cabinet reshuffle which saw her reportedly being offered the role of Minister for Work and Pensions.

The job Ms Greening turned down, Work and Pensions Secretary, was given instead to Esther McVey, who triggered controversy when she was a junior minister in the department under David Cameron.

Tory grandee Sir Nicholas Soames joined the calls for a "major improvement" on Twitter.

And it was quickly overshadowed by the 27-second tenure of Chris Grayling as party chairman to replace Patrick McLoughlin.

Nearly half (48 per cent) of the new cabinet attended Oxbridge, an increase compared to Theresa May's first cabinet in 2016 (44 per cent), but still lower than David Cameron's 2015 cabinet (50 per cent).

Green was sacked by the prime minister past year after making a misleading claiming about pornography found on his parliamentary computer in 2008.
