May's cabinet reshuffle in shambles after yet another resignation

Theresa May was left red-faced after the wrong person was announced as her Cabinet’s Party Chairman on Twitter before it was quickly deleted

There was also embarrassment for the Conservatives when the party's official Twitter account wrongly announced that Chris Grayling was their new chairman. There is no single candidate within the party who could take her job.

In her first comments on the reshuffle tonight, Mrs May said: 'This Government is about building a country fit for the future - one that truly works for everyone with a stronger economy and a fairer society.

David Lidington was appointed as minister for the cabinet office, replacing May's closest friend in parliament, Damian Green, who was forced to resign past year over misleading statements over pornography found on his computer. Hours late it was revealed that Grayling, rumored for the chop, was keeping his exact same job.

These include Finance Minister Philip Hammond who has angered many Tory MPs by often appearing to undermine the government's position in the separation negotiations with the European Union, as well as Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, who often amuses the media with his apparently patchy understanding of the finer points of diplomacy and is regarded as fundamentally disloyal.

There were some surprising developments, unrelated to the planned reshuffle.

Northern Ireland secretary James Brokenshire, who failed to secure a deal to restore the power-sharing government in Belfast after it collapsed a year ago, stepped down for health reasons. He was replaced by the culture secretary, Karen Bradley, who will take on the hard task of attempting to resolve the impasse in the province between the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein which has seen no administration there for a year.

But May, who heads a minority government divided over Brexit, had only limited room for change.

UPDATE: Brandon Lewis Named New UK Tory Chairman After Twitter Mix-Up

Making sure the scales didn't tip in favor of either side of Brexit was a handicap.

The reshuffle comes after the disappointing result for Mrs May in the June 2017 general election, in which she and her party defied expectations to consolidate their position in parliament to actually lose seats.

New Conservative chairman Brandon Lewis said there would be a "really good breath of fresh air coming in" among the lower ministerial ranks.

"I don't mean to be rude or to be seen to be disloyal but there needs to be a major improvement to the reshuffle tomorrow", tweeted senior Conservative lawmaker Nicholas Soames on Monday night. He then added a hashtag urging May to "get it right".

Earlier, Jeremy Hunt has rejected the Prime Minister's attempts to make him Business Secretary after the pair clashed over the NHS during heated talks in Downing Street. Instead, May confirmed Greg Clark would remain in the role. 61-year-old pro-Remain Damian Green, the former first secretary of state whose resignation prompted the reshuffle, was replaced by 61-year-old pro-Remain former Europe Minister David Lidington.

"The fact she's still in office", said Beech.
