Ukrainian Court Frees Ex-Leader of Georgia From Detention

Ukrainian prosecutors on Monday sought house arrest for former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is accused by the Ukrainian authorities of trying to stage a coup sponsored by Russian Federation.

Supporters of jailed political activist Mikheil Saakashvili marched the the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv today to demand the impeachment of President Petro Poroshenko and the release of Saakashvili from custody.

Prosecutors had asked to keep Saakashvili under house arrest, but the judge turned it down to the applause of Saakashvili's supporters.

Saakashvili, who was refusing food to protest the arrest, said that the first thing he now wants is to get back home and eat.

Tuesday's drama marked the latest chapter in the dizzying career of a man who spearheaded a pro-Western "Rose Revolution" in Georgia in 2003 and fought a disastrous war with Russian Federation five years later that eventually prompted him to flee the Caucasus country.

Poroshenko named him the governor of Ukraine's Odessa region in 2015, but Saakashvili resigned the following year, claiming that Poroshenko and other officials were impeding anti-corruption reforms, and became a strong critic of his former patron.
