FBI Director Testifies Before House Judiciary Committee, Republicans React

FBI director defends bureau's integrity as GOP lawmakers question him about probes

Wray spent most of the hearing deflecting questions from House Republicans about how Comey handled the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails.

Federal agents notified only two of almost 80 Americans targeted in recent years by a hacking outfit linked to Russian intelligence, the Associated Press reported recently, a troubling development raised by lawmakers questioning FBI Director Christopher Wray on Thursday during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

Gaetz referred to testimony from FBI Director Christopher Wray.

"My experience with the FBI has been positive", said Wray, who took over the bureau in August after Trump fired its previous director James Comey in May.

But he instead used the opportunity to praise the people who work at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "I see example after example of fidelity, integrity and bravery".

"It is absolutely unacceptable for FBI employees to permit their own political predilections to contaminate any investigation", said the committee's chairman, Republican Rep.

He was presumably referring to the involvement of the deputy director, Andrew McCabe, in the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.

"Even the appearance of impropriety will devastate the FBI's reputation", Goodlatte said.

Strzok's alleged conduct is now the subject of a probe by the Justice Department's inspector general. "And when we make mistakes, there are independent processes like that of the outside independent inspector general".

Representative Steve Chabot, an Ohio Republican, said "the depths of this anti-Trump bias on the Mueller team just goes on an on".

Strzok was removed from the probe after he sent texts that appeared to mock Trump, according to CNN.

"These matters are being looked at as they should be", he said.

Wray said Strzok "was reassigned away from the special counsel's investigation, which is different than disciplinary action".

Asked by the panel's senior Democrat, Representative Jerrold Nadler of NY, whether that was true, Wray delivered a lengthy defense of the bureau.

"We see this in the indictments, the four indictments, and pleas that have just taken place, and some of the comments that are being made", said Feinstein, who's also a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. "My experience has been that our reputation is quite good". He said the department has said the documents will be provided by January 15.

"My hunch is it has something to do with the dossier", he told Wray.

Did Peter Strzok help produce and present the application to the FISA court to secure a warrant to spy on Americans associated with the Trump campaign?
