Hope Solo, fired by U.S. Soccer when playing for the U.S. women's national team, is now trying to lead the entire federation.
Solo made the announcement Thursday night on Facebook. "Through all of these experiences", she added, "I have learned that it is the responsibility of those in leadership positions who have the ability to change policy to stop giving lip service to the issues, but to instead, execute and take the actions required to affect real change". It comes less than a week after current U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said he will not seek a fourth term. That includes investing in youth development; pushing for equal pay for women; making youth soccer more accessible to all; and making finances more transparent.
- Push for equal pay for the USA women's national team and all women in the federation workplace and inclusion of women at all levels of the federation. The deadline to obtain them is Tuesday.
Solo is the most decorated soccer player in USA women's team history, holding national records for appearances, starts, wins and shutouts. She has not announced her retirement from club or global play.
But off-the-field issues often got her in trouble with U.S. Soccer. The USA lost to Brazil, 4-0. In 2014, Solo was arrested on domestic assault charges related to a fight with her half-sister and nephew.
Over a year removed from her six-month suspension from the national team for offensive comments she made at the Rio Olympics, and knowing it's unlikely the US coaching staff will welcome her back as a player, Solo is campaigning to reenter US Soccer as its elected leader. Afterward, Solo called the Swedish team "cowards" for their defensive style of play. She last played in a game when the US was eliminated by Sweden in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympics.
- U.S. Soccer suspended Solo for 30 days in early 2015 following the DUI arrest of her husband Jerramy Stevens. Later, Nichols was pushed out by the USWNT players, who went on to sign a new collective bargaining agreement with U.S. Soccer.
