United Nations rights body passes Rohingya crimes measure

IOM Director General William Lacy Swing visits Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh

Zeid, who has described the campaign in the past as a "textbook case of ethnic cleansing", said none of the 626,000 Rohingya who have fled violence to Bangladesh since August should be repatriated to Myanmar unless there was robust monitoring on the ground.

Myanmar denies committing atrocities against the Rohingya.

China, the Philippines and Burundi voted against the measure.

Speaking to a human rights council session in Geneva, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, detailed the events in Myanmar's northwestern Rakhine state over the last few months.

A top Myanmar diplomat has rejected allegations by the United Nations human rights chief that the country's government has taken action to "dehumanize" Rohingya Muslims.

He told a special session of the Human Rights Council on the Rohingya on Tuesday: "My government is doing everything possible to deter these extremist acts".

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday condemned the violent oppression of Myanmar's Rohingya and called on President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Myanmar's military.

Amina Khatun, a 30-year-old Rohingya refugee who fled with her family from Myanmar a day before, cries near Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh October 10, 2017.

These crimes had been "perpetrated by Myanmar security forces and extremist Buddhist vigilantes", Alam said.

Marzuki Darusman, who heads the independent fact-finding mission, told the Human Rights Council by videoconference that his team has "not yet come to any conclusion on these issues".

"Can anyone -can anyone- rule out that elements of genocide may be present?" Members of the U.S. senate also travelled there in November.

In the sprawling camps of southern Bangladesh, now home to over 800,000 Rohingya, many say they would prefer to remain there, because they do not trust Myanmar's assurances of safe return. A draft resolution urges Zeid's office to report on cooperation between Myanmar's government with United Nations rights monitors.
