Stoltenberg Expresses NATO Support For Georgia, Urges Russian Troop Pullout

Stoltenberg: NATO is in confrontation with Russia over aggression in Ukraine

NATO-Georgia Commission meeting has been held in Brussels, within the alliance's foreign ministerial, which was described as "very constructive" by NATO's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

USA envoy to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said that "there has been no change whatsoever" in planning for two days of talks between Tillerson and his NATO counterparts starting Tuesday. "We call on Russian Federation to end its recognition of these regions and withdraw its forces from Georgian territory". Russian Federation continued to support the two rebel administrations throughout the 1990s and early 2000s as intermittent clashes between Georgia and separatists worsened.

NATO Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their practical and political support for Georgia today (Wednesday 6 December) as well as their commitment to Georgia's eventual membership of the Alliance.

"We have seen again and again that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and NATO ministers are able to focus on the core task, on the job we have to do, despite any speculations and rumours, and I am absolutely certain that this will be the case also now", Stoltenberg said.

The secretary general stated that the implementation of the NATO-Georgia Substantial Package was marking "impressive progress".
