Aaron Boone knows he has to convince players he can manage

Yankees To Officially Introduce Aaron Boone As Manager

The Bombers have their new manager - introducing Aaron Boone on Wednesday - but A-Rod isn't shutting the door on the possibility that he'd take the job someday down the road.

Now here comes Aaron Boone, 44, out of the ESPN television booth, where he's served as an analyst, to manage the Yankees, a team that just made a surprising run to the seventh game of the AL Championship Series under Joe Girardi.

"It's certainly something that I'm known for in my baseball life, obviously, and in some way probably is a contributor to me being here today", he said. It feels like the chance of a lifetime for me.

Aaron Boone is making strong manager-player relationships in the clubhouse a priority.

Boone takes over a team stocked with young talent. "I'm really comfortable that me and my staff will be part of this team taking the next step".

"This is a team that in many ways came of age this year and arrived, " Boone said. He becomes the 18th Yankees manager to have played for the club. Boone has never managed or coached at any level, working as a broadcaster since last season after retiring as a player in 2009.

Boone replaces Joe Girardi, who was sacked on October 26 - shortly after the Yankees fell one win shy of advancing to the World Series by losing Game 7 of the American League Championship Series to the Houston Astros.

General manager Brian Cashman introduced Boone to the NY media on Wednesday.

And somehow, Cashman talked Hal Steinbrenner into the Boone hire after the Yankees' owner expressed his public concerns about naming someone without any previous managing experience.

"It was long, it was tough, it was so fun", Boone said. I don't want to get caught up in that personally and I don't think I will. Boone very much sounded like he fit the description when he was asked to define success for his new job. "Then it was hyper-focused on going from how can we get the Yankees better".

Fans will remember his heroics in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when he blasted a walk-off home run in the 11th inning, launching the Yankees into the World Series, which they eventually lost to the Marlins. Not a Hall of Famer by any stretch, but he was selected for an All-Star Game in 2003 and later that year hit one of the most famous postseason home runs in Major League Baseball history.

Boone will wear uniform 17, his number with Cincinnati and Cleveland; pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has the No. 19 jersey Boone wore with the Yankees in 2003. Boone was a big league third baseman from 1997-2009 and an All-Star in 2003, when NY acquired him from the Reds at the trade deadline. "We're going to continue to build our relationship so that we can grow him in every facet because we know what an impact player he can be".

"That's a respect you earn, and hopefully I think in short order I'll be able to earn that respect, that they'll be able to look at me, trust in me, know that I have their interest at heart, but know that hopefully I know what the heck I'm talking about", he said.
