Air rifles, shotguns and flares handed in during weapons surrender

Some of the weapons handed in so far during the amnesty

Firearms ranging from BB guns to pistols and revolvers have been handed in to designated police stations across Dorset since the gun amnesty began on the 13th November.

The firearms surrender is part of a national campaign and is now mid way through, running until Sunday.

They will then either be destroyed or in exceptional circumstances, if the weapon has historical value, it may be donated to a museum.

A walking stick sword has also been handed in to South Yorkshire Police.

Police warn that no firearms or ammunition should be left outside of any police station. The majority of the firearms handed in during the last surrender were older items that the owner no longer needed and wanted to safely dispose of.

There has also been nearly 50 ammunition surrenders.

"Whilst gun crime is very low in Hertfordshire, the national campaign is a great opportunity to stop guns falling into the wrong hands".

"By participating in the surrender, people can be confident that items have been safely disposed of".

The National Police Chief's Council lead for Criminal Use of Firearms, Assistant Chief Constable Helen McMillan, asked forces to take part in the national surrender this month following a rise in gun crime offences.

Cumbria has a large number of people who hold licensed firearms and store them appropriately.

"If you are one of these people why not take advantage of this surrender period - it could save somebody's life."

Yesterday a wide range of air-powered weapons, starting pistols, shotguns and antique weapons were surrendered, including one haul of 22 weapons.
