Six Syrians arrested over German Christmas market terror plot

Six Syrian men arrested across Germany on suspicion of Isil 'Christmas market' plot

Six Syrian nationals were arrested on Tuesday by German police, in connection with the planning of a terrorist attack on a German Christmas market, according to local media.

A German intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told CNN the suspects had been doing target reconnaissance of the areas in which Christmas markets in Essen, Germany, would be held.

"According to the Frankfurt attorney general, the arrested men are supporters of Islamic State and are suspected of having planned a" serious state-damaging act of violence" with "weapons or explosives on a public target", reports German broadsheet Die Welt.

Public broadcaster HR cited investigators as saying that the cell had been planning a terrorist attack on a Christmas market in Essen.

About 500 policemen in four different federal states were involved in the raids in which the men, said to be aged between 20 and 28, were arrested.

Four of the six suspects came to Germany in December 2014 as asylum seekers, while the remaining two arrived in the country in August and September 2016, also by posing as refugees.

It comes ahead of the December 19 anniversary of the lorry attack in Berlin that killed 12 people and injured 56 others. Breitbart London reported that a Syrian asylum seeker who was a roommate to the terrorist had warned authorities of his extreme views, but no action was taken.
