Coffee and plant-based diets linked to lower heart failure risk

Just 1 Cup of Coffee a Week May Lower Risk of Stroke & Heart Failure

The research found that every additional cup per week is associated with decreased risk of developing heart failure by 7 percent (and stroke by 8 percent) compared with non-coffee drinkers.

I, for one, can't function without a large cup of coffee in the morning.

For their study, researchers took the Framingham Heart Study - which began in the "40s, and now includes over 15,000 people - and designed a special algorithm to detect data patterns, then corroborated their findings by finding the same pattern in two other major studies (the Cardiovascular Heart Study and the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study)". An association simply means that they found that participants who report drinking coffee also suffer stroke and heart failure less than those who report not drinking coffee.

While many risk factors for heart failure and stroke are well known, the researchers believe there are still unidentified risk factors.

The findings were to be presented Monday at the heart association's annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

First author of the study and doctoral student Laura Stevens said: "Machine learning works by finding associations within data, much in the same way that online shopping sites predict products you may like based on your shopping history, and is one type of big data analysis".

'Lord of the Rings' TV adaptation gets multi-season Amazon deal
Tolkien did write many stories of Middle Earth that take place in eras prior to the adventures of Frodo, Sam, and the fellowship. Amazon says it will bring " The Lord of the Rings " to the small screen.

"Granted, it's preliminary research that hasn't appeared in a peer-reviewed journal yet, but based on these researchers" and others' findings, there's mounting evidence that coffee's combo of caffeine, natural antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory effects somehow helps fight off very bad cardiovascular conditions. The researchers tried to run a similar analysis for the consumption of red meat but the connection was more hard to validate because the definition of what counts as red meat varied between the Framingham Heart Study and those studies that were comparable.

Researchers have not determined if how much coffee you drink per day lowers your risk of heart related diseases even more, but they do say at least an eight ounce cup per day improves overall health. In this case, red meat consumption was identified as a potential risk factor, although here, the correlation was less striking.

Researchers at the University of Colorado studied how certain foods impact heart health andfound coffee is key to a healthier heart. Instead, they suggest replacing it with chicken, fish, and beans.

"By including coffee in the model, the prediction accuracy increased by 4 percent", says Dr. Kao. The association receives funding primarily from individuals; foundations and corporations (including pharmaceutical, device manufacturers and other companies) also make donations and fund specific association programs and events.

In June experts at Imperial College London drinking two cups of coffee a day could slash the risk of premature death. They hope that machine learning methods will be effective in uncovering hitherto unknown culprits.
