Trump meets Japan, Australia leaders, discusses trade, North Korea threat

Japan's PM Abe arrives in PH for ASEAN-related summits

When President Donald Trump met with his counterparts from Australia and Japan on Monday in Manila, two other countries were on the leaders' minds - China and North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held the annual Japan-ASEAN summit on Monday in Manila, at which Abe said Japan and ASEAN should lead the development of a "free and open" global order.

"We've got the same values and the same focus", Turnbull said about the meeting with Trump and Abe, adding that the North Korean missile crisis dominated the conversation, according to the Australian.

The two sides should continue to increase exchanges on culture, media and youths, and can also strengthen people-to-people bond through carrying out cooperation on Olympics as China will host the Winter Olympic Games in 2022 and Japan will host the Summer Olympics in 2020, Xi added. Duterte said the Asean was trying to persuade Kim to stop his aggressiveness as this may bring the world to the point of no return."That is why we are persuading him, maybe pleading him to stop the aggressive posture because we are not..."

The US President confirmed he was unaware of the incident at the time.

Since February, North Korea has launched 22 missiles during 15 tests. "It is bad, it puts a strain on everybody, not only in Japan but all over the world", said Duterte.

Despite remote possibilities of the Philippines getting hit by a North Korean missile, Duterte told Abe that Manila is with Japan in pressuring the hermit state to stop its nuclear and missile program.

He had also called Kim a "nutcase" playing with "dangerous toys".

Some of the ASEAN members said in response that North Korea presents a serious threat to the region, the spokesman said without going into further detail.

The foreign minister stressed that North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons is a war deterrence to end the threat and to prevent the military invasion of the US.
