Three UCLA Basketball Players Remain Under House Arrest In China, Trump Intervenes

LiAngelo Ball is one of three UCLA players detained in China after allegedly shoplifting last

The case of the three UCLA basketball players arrested in China on suspicion of shoplifting has officially caught the eye of President Donald Trump, who personally asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help resolve the case, according to the Washington Post.

According to The Washington Post, Trump discussed the players' arrests during his visit to China, and Xi promised to look into the case and ensure the players are treated fairly and expeditiously. Chief of Staff John F. Kelly has reportedly served as an intermediary between UCLA and Chinese officials in the hopes of bringing the players back to the United States quickly.

The Bruins visited China to play in a game sponsored by Alibaba, an e-commerce giant based in Hangzhou.

Citing a source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation, ESPN reported the players could be in Hangzhou for "a week or two" while the situation is resolved. ESPN reported Monday that Chinese authorities have surveillance video showing the players taking merchandise from as many as three upscale shops.
