NPA urges members to be Antibiotic Guardians as awareness weeks gets underway

Pig industry warns against further 'unsubstantiated' antibiotic reductions

NICE says stewardship programmes - where healthcare providers are taught specifically when and where to use antibiotic treatment - could slow down the development of medicine resistance in diseases.

The theme is: "Seek advice from a qualified health care professional before taking antibiotics".

"The lectures will be presented by some of the national core group members and members of the advisory committee, and will focus on the findings on antibiotic use and resistance in the AMR situational analysis. Not only that, by using antibiotic treatment unnecessarily, other bacteria in the environment as well as the "healthy" bacteria in the body gets the opportunity to develop resistance due to exposure, which can potentially cause antibiotic resistant infections later on", says Dr Paul Soko executive head of clinical services and quality at Life Healthcare Group Antibiotic-resistant infections are complex and hard to treat.

On November 7, 2017, World Health Organization issued a statement recommending that farmers and the food industry stop using antibiotics routinely to promote growth and prevent disease in healthy animals.

She stressed that sometimes the antibiotic is not really needed to treat the condition for which the patient requests it, and, as a result of giving the antibiotic for a simple matter, the body is forced to build up resistance to prevent the drug from working in the future.

The NPA is urging pig producers to sign up to become "Antibiotic Guardians", as World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) gets underway.

13-19, 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners will reach out to the general public, health professionals, governments, farmers, veterinarians, the food and feed industry and others via a social media campaign using infographics, quizzes and success stories to raise awareness of the need to act on antibiotic resistance and what kinds of steps we can take.

Dr. Peters said if the meat is sold with residues from the drug, it is especially unsafe, because the animals will not be cured from the bacterial infections, and, if consumed, it will pose a greater problem to the health of the public. Where they can be bought for human or animal use without a prescription, the emergence and spread of resistance is made worse.

" You only take antibiotics prescribed by a health worker and do not share with family and friends".

"A lack of effective antibiotics is as serious a security threat as a sudden and deadly disease outbreak", says Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. If antibiotics are prescribed for you, please ensure that you ask your doctor if they are necessary, and if they are, follow the instructions given to you. Quantities of antibiotics used for therapeutic purposes increased up to 223 %.
