Mad Max's George Miller Is Taking Warner Bros. to Court

Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller sues Warner Bros.

The helmer claims the studio owes his production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, which he co-runs with producing partner Doug Mitchell, an unpaid $7 million. The long-anticipated sequel famously went through several delays before even starting production, ultimately becoming a global all-around success with near-universal critical acclaim, $378 million worldwide, and six Academy awards.

Cindy Ord via Getty Images Miller's production company has brought a claim against Warner Bros. for "misleading and deceptive conduct".

In 2015, George Miller's post-apocalyptic odyssey, Mad Max: Fury Road, roared through theaters, leaving images of tire treads, desert storms, and flaming guitars scorched across moviegoer's eyeballs.

Just the other day I happened to stumble across a brilliant article in which Oscar-winning Ocean's Trilogy filmmaker Steven Soderbergh absolutely geeked out over Mad Max: Fury Road.

After Mad Max: Fury Road proceeded to melt minds with its wild stunts, stirring story, and badass feminist message, audiences understandably wanted to more.

Exterior upgrades replace the front splitter, air intakes, rear bumper and roof with carbonfibre units. In a nod to the famous McLaren F1 of the 1990s, the auto features a 24-carat gold engine heat shield.

Warner Bros. argues that the NSW was "a clearly inappropriate forum" to arbitrate the dispute, and it should be handled in California.

Per the Sydney Morning Herald, Miller's production house Kennedy Miller Mitchell and Warner Bros. entered into a deal that should've net Miller and company a $7 million bonus. That hard work resulted in a picture which found wide acclaim globally ... Justice David Hammerschlag sided with the production company in the decision to try the case in Australia, but it remains to be seen how the court will rule as far as the specific costs that caused Miller to file this lawsuit in the first place.

The statement continued: "We would much prefer to be making movies with Warner Bros than litigating with them but, after trying for over a year, we were unable to reach a satisfactory resolution and have now had to resort to a lawsuit to sort things out".

Warner Bros. disagrees with Kennedy Miller Marshall's position and plans to defend itself from their claims in court, but let's be real: you don't care about the he-said/she-said of all this. Part of the Kennerdy Miller Mitchell agreement with Warner Bros. reportedly included a clause that said the former would be given the opportunity to finance the project would the latter start searching for another co-financer. And there's more at stake here than some money: how this turns out could determine Miller's involvement with a new Mad Max film. He asserts that Warner Bros. shouldn't take those costs into account.
