HTC unveils a standalone VR headset called Vive Focus

HTC Vive Focus standalone VR headset eliminates wires

No launch price or date has been announced, though developers can sign up for a development kit on HTC's Vive Focus page. Unlike some other standalone VR headsets, you don't need your phone.

HTC Vive report it is concerned by the continuing fragmentation of the VR market, particularly in China. The other thing worth mentioning is the fact that it definitely looks quite bulk (due to the tech being inside). Dubbed the Vive Focus, this all-in-one device features inside-out 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) "world-scale" tracking, meaning it doesn't require external base stations nor sensors, so you can get positional tracking anywhere at any time - even on a train or plane, should you wish to. The company hopes that Vive Wave will "bring together the highly fragmented mobile VR market" by make device optimisation and content creation easier for third-party developers. The Vive Wave platform purports to solve two industry problems: It gives software developers a larger potential customer base with no extra effort; and it frees hardware designers to focus on hardware innovation, rather than perfecting a software distribution system.

Created to be an all-in-one device, the Focus won't need to be hooked up to a powerful desktop PC in order to run and won't have the same interactivity constraints that mobile VR now has. Oculus revealed last month something similar with its Oculus Go stand-alone VR headset, which is also powered by a Qualcomm processor. Developers who are already using Unity will enjoy the added benefit of the new one-click process to publish to Viveport, along with in-app payment support starting with China. Per the device's website, the headset supports something called WorldSense which support six degrees of freedom, allowing for natural movements like ducking, leaning, and peeking. While Oculus executives have outright noted that they are not particularly interested in making money off of hardware sales, there aren't many other options for HTC which has done a poor job of becoming a platform company in the United States despite being first-to-market. Somehow he ended up in London, where he had the golden opportunity to buy a then senior editor a pint of lager, and here we are.
