Hate crimes on the rise in U.S., reveals Federal Bureau of Investigation data

FBI data shows hate crimes appeared to drop in Wisconsin

Hate crimes against black people declined by 3 offenses from 2015 to 2016.

Hate crimes in Wisconsin are dropping.

In 2016, 6,121 hate crime incidents were reported -an increase of five percent from 2015. The others are Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas and Wyoming. Muslims were targeted in 307 religion-based crimes, up 19 percent from 2015 and double the number in 2014. 63 percent of the crimes were related to bias against homosexual males, while 22 percent represented bias against homosexuals in general, bisexuals, and transgender individuals. The community has been a victim of hate crimes as they are usually mistaken as Arabs due to their turbans.

According to the report, there were 6,063 single-bias incidents involving 7,509 victims of which approximately 59 percent were targeted because on racial, ethnic and/or ancestral bias; 21 percent because of religious bias, 17 percent on sexual orientation bias, 2 percent on gender identity bias, 1 percent on disability bias, and 0.5 percent on gender bias.

Nintendo and Universal in talks for animated Mario Bros. movie
The Journal previously reported that a live-action Legend of Zelda series was being developed by Nintendo for Netflix. Back in 2014, Sony was in talks with Nintendo for an animated Super Mario Bros . film but a deal was never announced.

The report was based on data voluntarily submitted by about 15,000 law enforcement agencies.

"There's a risky disconnect between the rising problem of hate crimes and the lack of credible data being reported", said Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan A Greenblatt, who called for an "all-hands-on-deck approach" to address underreporting. The FBI recorded nine murders and 24 rapes as hate crimes. Most of the crimes came in the form of intimidation, assault, or vandalism.

"Police departments that do not report credible data to the Federal Bureau of Investigation risk sending the message that this is not a priority issue for them, which may threaten community trust in their ability and readiness to address hate violence". The letter also highlights the coalition's broader priorities to help inform the DOJ's plan of action to prevent and respond to hate violence.

The FBI has reported an increase in hate crimes in the United States for a second consecutive year, with Hindus and Sikhs among those targeted in the more than 6,000 incidents of crimes motivated by biases towards religions, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.
