Trump asked Chinese president for help over arrested UCLA basketball players

The case of the three UCLA basketball players arrested in China on suspicion of shoplifting has officially caught the eye of President Donald Trump, who personally asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help resolve the case, according to the Washington Post. The players were arrested last week and charged with shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store located next to the team's hotel.

The players involved are Cody Riley, Jalen Hill and LiAngelo Ball, brother of Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball.

Trump talked to Xi about the arrests during a state visit last week to Beijing, part of the president's five-nation Asian trip, The Washington Post reported.

Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly, has also reportedly been in contact with the players, their families and the UCLA coaching staff. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed to the Post that Trump did discuss the issue with Xi.

"We are not going to let the United States be taken advantage of anymore", Trump told business leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Danang, Vietnam. However, the charges against the players were reduced and the case was headed toward a resolution, a source told ESPN.
