Lyft confirms Toronto expansion by end of year

Tech giant Uber has pledged $5million to seven different organizations that work to prevent sexual assaults. The money will go to helping the organizations fund their own programs and training Uber employees in how to deal with sexual harassment and assau

The company announced it would be launching in Toronto, Canada by the end of this year.

The move follows aggressive expansion in the United States, where Lyft has also benefited from stumbles at rival Uber. Lyft has raised $3.6 billion in funding since it launched in 2012, compared with the roughly $15 billion raised by Uber, which has a valuation of about $68 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Lyft Inc.is expanding its ride-hailing services north of the border to Toronto, its first market outside of the U.S.

It's another move in Lyft's plan to compete with rival Uber, which now is in 77 countries. It has partnerships with Ford and General Motors, as well as worldwide ride-hailing apps, such as India's Ola.

It has also gained market share in the USA, as Uber's reputation has faltered amid an outcry over its corporate culture and data collection practices.
