Colin Kaepernick Named 'Citizen of the Year' By GQ Magazine

Colin Kaepernick named by GQ as one of their Men of the Year

GQ states in the story that Kaepernick, who has rarely spoken publicly since becoming a free agent earlier this year, has "grown wise to the power of his silence".

GQ magazine has named Colin Kaepernick, the unemployed former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, its 2017 "Citizen of the Year".

Approximately 90 men are now employed as quarterbacks in the National Football League, as either starters or reserves, and Colin Kaepernick is better-indisputably, undeniably, flat-out better-than at least 70 of them.

GQ also writes that Kaepernick agreed to participate in its project because "he wants to reclaim the narrative of his protest".

In the Men (and Women) of the Year 2017 issue, Kaepernick spoke about activism, protests, and equality, and offered insights into Colin Kaepernick himself.

Kaepernick garnered national attention past year by taking a knee during the national anthem as a means of protesting racial inequality and police brutality. It has helped his story go around the world.

Niners linebacker Eric Reid, who joined Kaepernick previous year in his protest and has continued to kneel during the national anthem this season, was one of the individuals who spoke to GQ about his former teammate. Why talk now, when your detractors will only twist your words and use them against you?

Kaepernick took to social media on Monday morning to share the exciting cover, and while there is no shortage of haters on Twitter, the majority of responses to the magazine's choice of featuring him were overwhelmingly grateful.

"At the same time, Colin is all too aware that silence creates a vacuum, and that if it doesn't get filled somehow, someone else will fill it for him".
