Russian Federation will implement retaliatory measures over USA actions against RT next week

Vladimir Putin

Under the US law, Nauert said, registration "is simply triggered when an entity or an individual engages in political activity".

At the same time, the Washington Post quoted an assessment by USA intelligence agencies on RT America made in January this year.

This is not the first time Russian Federation has criticized the US for taking actions against its media outlets. "Since such decisions are being made on USA territory in relation to our TV channels, it will be right for us to respond to these actions".

"This requirement is discriminatory, it contradicts both the principles of democracy and freedom of speech", she said.

The broadcaster, RT, reported Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice has demanded the registration be done by Monday.

The Kremlin-backed channel said yesterday the Department of Justice had given it until Monday to register its U.S. operations as a foreign agent or see its head arrested and its accounts frozen. In short, in this situation the company would not be able to work.

It also said that RT America "has positioned itself as a domestic United States channel and has deliberately sought to obscure any legal ties to the Russian government", but behind the scenes, "The Kremlin staffs RT and closely supervises RT's coverage, recruiting people who can convey Russian strategic messaging due to their ideological beliefs".

She added: "We will continue to work and continue to fight this as long as it's possible".

Chief ministers of the stakeholders in this crisis, however, appear bent on shirking responsibility and political one-upmanship. He stressed the need for resolving the matter in tandem and requested them for a meeting in the near future for discussions.

"The US Department of Justice wheeled out a cannibalistic Monday deadline", she tweeted Thursday.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the Rossiya-24 television channel: "I think that our patience that is almost run out will take some legal shape". The decision came in the wake of investigations into Kremlin attempts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.

RT denies that it is an agent of the Russian government and says on its site that it offers "stories overlooked by mainstream media" and "alternative perspectives".

Russia's embassy in the US denounced the reported Justice Department order.

The assessment also said RT America "has positioned itself as a domestic USA channel and has deliberately sought to obscure any legal ties to the Russian government, " but behind the scenes, "the Kremlin staffs RT and closely supervises RT's coverage, recruiting people who can convey Russian strategic messaging due to their ideological beliefs".

The Russian Federation Council Committee on State Sovereignty recently compiled a list of five major USA media outlets that were in consideration for "blacklisting" in a reciprocal measure for restrictions on Russian media.

According to the most recent report filed with the Justice Department, at least five foreign media outlets have registered under FARA, including broadcasters from Canada, Korea, Japan, and others. Such a registration would require any reporting to be labeled as being financed or influenced by the Russian government, among other restrictions.

It's not entirely clear how this label would apply to US media and how it would potentially affect their work.
