It's worth noting that while Gardenhire isn't known for his tactical ability, he is a drastic departure from former manager Brad Ausmus in that he enters the job with a wealth of experience.

Faced with a number of painful rebuilding years on the horizon, the Tigers are expected to hire veteran Ron Gardenhire as the manager to guide the young team into the future, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. He was sacked after the 2014 season.

Gardenhire managed the division-rival Twins from 2002-14, posting a 1,068-1,039 record in the process.

Gardenhire, who turns 60 next week, served as the Diamondbacks' bench coach during the 2017 season. Martinez, Justin Upton and Justin Verlander this season. He has since interviewed with the Boston Red Sox, who also have a vacancy.

Gardenhire led the Twins to a record of 1,068-1,038, and is second only to Tom Kelly on the Twins' managerial wins list. Gardenhire was dismissed after 2014 - by that point he'd navigated Minnesota to four consecutive losing seasons.

Over his last four years in Minnesota, the Twins went 78-148 from August 1 on for an abysmal.345 winning percentage. Gardenhire was seen as a seasoned, battle-tested option in this regard.

Gardenhire took a leave of absence to recover from surgery for prostate cancer earlier this season but returned to the club in May. In August, he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he'd received a clean bill of health.
