Man sues Sunwing Airlines because it served sparkling wine instead of champagne

Champagne

A Canadian man has filed a lawsuit against Sunwing Airlines for promising a champagne service and instead serving sparkling wine.

Daniel Macduff was flying Sunwing Airlines from Quebec to Cuba for vacation when he was offered the complimentary Champagne service, the BBC reported.

But instead of the promised tipple, he was given cheaper bubbly.

Sunwing's website also clarifies that passengers will be served sparkling wine and non-alcoholic beverages.

Montreal lawyer Sébastien Paquette said: "It's not about the pettiness of champagne versus sparkling wine". 'It's the consumer message behind it'. The airline responded by calling the lawsuit "frivolous" and "worthless", according to the British BBC network.

However, it has since changed its marketing and dropped references to "champagne".

Sparkling wine is not the same as Champagne, and never the twain shall meet.

The class action still has to be certified by the courts.

The airline said the use of "champagne service", and "champagne vacations", in their marketing was meant to hint at the level of service of the travel package-not to describe the in-flight drinks. The man's lawyer says about 1,600 other people have come forward to join the class action suit.

The airline added the inflight service has been "consistently been well-received by customers". However, it's seeking compensation for the monetary difference between the wine served and a glass of champagne, as well as punitive damages.
