Goldman Sachs Group boss takes hit at Brexit with Frankfurt tweet

Lloyd Blankfein

"Great meetings, great weather, really enjoyed it".

The boss of the investment bank said he will be spending "a lot more time" in Frankfurt.

The tweet sent tongues wagging across Wall Street - with some speculating that Blankfein was intimating that Goldman was going to move its European headquarters from London to the central German city of 750,000.

The annual EEF survey found a third of companies said that they were committed to current plans but awaiting a Brexit deal before investing further, with a further 13% revealing they were now holding off on all investment.

The Bank of England recently warned that worldwide banks were beginning to implement their worst-case scenario Brexit plans given the UK's inability to date to secure a transition deal.

The group already leases office space in Frankfurt and employs around 6,000 people in the City.

Shia LaBeouf pleads guilty to charge stemming from Georgia arrest
Over the course of the arrest, he called officers "cowards", "pirates", "slimy", and other profane things. This reportedly caused LaBeouf to accost the individual, resulting in a run-in with the police.

Earlier this year, the United States bank's chief executive Richard Gnodde said it was going to move hundreds of staff out of Britain before a Brexit deal is struck. The bank is also thought to be looking at expanding its operation in Paris. Reports that Goldman could move some United Kingdom staff to Frankfurt due to Brexit first emerged in November 2016. But let's be clear, London is and will remain the world's leading financial centre.

"We have the breadth of talent, legal system, regulation and deep pools of capital that are simply unrivalled by centres in Europe". And Blankfein has previously warned that Brexit could harm London's status as a global financial power.

The Goldman chairman and chief executive is not a prolific tweeter, having done so just 20 times since he started posting on the social messaging service in June.

More dire business warnings are expected on Friday from other employers' groups in Britain if the European Union summit fails to generate any good news on the direction of Brexit talks.

He tweeted on 26 June: "Beautiful day in London".

As for Blankfein, Friday is not the first time the Goldman CEO has taken to Twitter to comment on political events.
