Facebook's Building 8 Chief Is Leaving the Company

Facebook's consumer hardware chief, Regina Dugan, is leaving after less than two years

Regina Dugan, Vice President of Engineering at Facebook's moonshot factory Building 8 chose to leave the company after spending only a year and a half with the social media giant. Dugan, as the head of Facebook Building 8, detailed some of the company's plans such as embeddable brain sensors during Facebook's F8 conference this year.

Dugan made a big splash when she arrived at Facebook in early 2016. She will work in close collaboration with the company to ensure the smooth transition in 2018.

When asked about Regina Dugan, Chief Technology Officer Michael Schroepfer called it a "personal highlight" to work with her. Schroepfer said that Dugan had done an wonderful job in building a team and the company will feel the positive impact of her work in the years to come, according to Bloomberg. At Building 8, which she joined in 2016, she lead some of Facebook's most experimental hardware efforts, including its "brain computer interface project". Not only did she join to run Facebook's hardware efforts, which were totally new and garnered a commitment of hundreds of millions of dollars from the company, but Dugan has an impressive background. The Menlo Park, California-based company has yet to comment on the matter in an official capacity and it remains to be seen how quickly will the firm be able to find a direct replacement for Ms. Dugan. Other projects include a video chat device codenamed "Aloha".

"There is a tidal shift going on in Silicon Valley, and those of us in this industry have greater responsibilities than ever before", Ms. Dugan said in the statement.

She also said; "The timing feels right to step away and be purposeful about what's next, thoughtful about new ways to contribute in times of disruption".

Now she is leaving and it's unclear whether or not her departure will affect any of Facebook's existing projects. When Building 8 was created, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said the unit would create hardware products that "advance our mission of connecting the world".
